Kids, or adults for that matter, don't try this at home. A fugu is a Japanese pufferfish. It looks like a ball with spines sticking out. Fugu is also a Japanese dish prepared from the fish's meat. Fugu are highly poisonous. If the fish is not prepared correctly, it can kill the chef or the eater. Chefs must get a special license to prepare the fish.

Fugu contains a nerve toxin. It is called tetrodotoxin. It prevents the nerves from talking to the muscles. The symptoms include dizziness, headache, nausea, or difficulty breathing. The victim is awake but paralyzed. For 50% to 80% of them, death follows in a day or less. There is no known antidote to the poison. Doctors try to keep the heart and breathing going until the toxin wears off.
